Denmark Immigration Changes 2026: What Expats Need to Know

Denmark updated its immigration rules effective January 1, 2026, with changes that affect non-EU nationals looking to work and live in the country. If you are planning a move, already in the application process, or advising someone who is, this guide covers what actually changed, what stayed the same, and what it means practically.

What Changed on January 1, 2026

Higher Salary Thresholds

The minimum salary required to qualify under the Pay Limit Scheme (Beløbsordningen) and the Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme increased for 2026, to DKK 552,000 and DKK 446,000 a year respectively (2026 level). Denmark adjusts these thresholds annually, and the 2026 figures represent a meaningful increase over 2025, when they were DKK 514,000 and DKK 415,000.

This matters most if your salary offer is close to the threshold. If your employer's offer was just above the 2025 minimum, it may now fall below the 2026 line. Before signing a contract, confirm the current threshold on nyidanmark.dk or with SIRI directly.

The threshold includes your gross annual salary plus employer pension contributions. Performance bonuses, housing allowances, and benefits in kind typically do not count toward the minimum.

Increased Application Fees

Application fees for work and residence permits rose across the board. The fee increase applies to new applications, renewals, and some case-processing charges. This does not affect EU citizens, who do not need work permits.

Narrower Positive List

The Positive List — Denmark's curated list of occupations where there is a documented shortage of qualified workers — was revised for 2026. Some job titles that appeared on previous versions have been removed, meaning those roles no longer qualify through this specific route.

If your job was on the Positive List in 2025, do not assume it remains there. Check the current list on SIRI's website before starting an application. If your role was removed, you may still qualify through the Pay Limit Scheme (if your salary meets the threshold) or the Fast-track Scheme (if your employer is certified).

Suspended Healthcare Worker Permits

Denmark suspended the issuance of new temporary residence permits for foreign doctors and nurses seeking Danish professional authorization. This suspension runs from October 7, 2025 for nurses and December 15, 2025 for doctors until December 31, 2026.

If you are a healthcare professional outside the EU planning to come to Denmark for clinical authorization: this route is closed, and applications that were already pending are rejected, with the fee refunded. Healthcare workers who already hold permits are not affected.

This does not block all healthcare employment — it specifically targets the temporary permit route for those seeking to gain Danish professional authorization. If you already have a recognized qualification and a job offer, other permit schemes may still apply.

What Did Not Change

Several important aspects of Danish immigration policy remain the same in 2026:

• EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens are not affected. Freedom of movement continues to apply.
• The Fast-track Scheme for certified employers remains available, though fees may have changed.
• The Researcher Scheme for academic and research positions continues.
• The Start-up Denmark programme for entrepreneurs remains active.
• Family reunification rules were not part of this round of changes, though they have their own ongoing adjustments.
• Permanent residency requirements remain at approximately 8 years of lawful residence with integration requirements met (language, employment, self-sufficiency).

What This Means for You

If You Are Already in Denmark on a Work Permit

Your current permit is valid until its expiration date. These changes apply when you renew or change permit type, with one exception: if you extend a Pay Limit Scheme or Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme permit on unchanged terms of employment, you may continue with the minimum amount that applied when you first applied (Pay Limit, Supplementary Pay Limit). Plan ahead for renewals — check the new fee before your current permit expires.

If You Are Currently Applying

Applications submitted before January 1, 2026 are processed under the rules that were in effect at the time of submission. If you submitted in late 2025 but have not yet received a decision, the old thresholds should apply. The exception is the doctor and nurse quota: pending applications for a permit to obtain Danish authorisation are rejected regardless of when they were submitted. 4. Talk to your employer — most Danish employers handle the application process. If yours does not, that is unusual and worth questioning.

Coming on 1 January 2027: A Lower Salary Route for Some Nationalities

A law adopted on 3 September 2026 adds a collective-agreement pay limit scheme from 1 January 2027. It needs a salary of at least DKK 322,000 a year (2026 level), a full-time job covered by a designated collective agreement, an employer certified by SIRI for the scheme, and citizenship of a country on the ministry's published list (16 countries, according to SIRI). If You Are a Healthcare Professional

Wait for the suspension to lift (currently set for December 31, 2026) or explore alternative permit routes. The Pay Limit Scheme may work if you have a job offer with a salary above the threshold. The Positive List may still include some healthcare-adjacent roles. Consult SIRI for your specific situation.

Immigration rules in Denmark change annually. The most reliable sources:

• SIRI (Styrelsen for International Rekruttering og Integration) — the agency that processes work permits
• Your employer's HR or legal department — certified Fast-track employers typically track changes closely

Do not rely on immigration consultancy blogs or forum posts for threshold figures. These go stale within months. Always verify against the official source before making decisions.

The Broader Context
