International Schools in Sweden — Options, Fees, and What to Expect
A practical guide to international schools in Stockholm and Sweden: IB schools, British curriculum, Swedish free schools, fees, and how to enrol your child.
If you are moving to Sweden with school-age children, you have a genuine choice between fee-paying international schools, free Swedish schools that teach in English, and the standard Swedish school system. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay and what qualifications you want your child to finish with.
Every child has the right to free education in Sweden
Before getting into options: all children living in Sweden — regardless of immigration status, nationality, or whether you have a personnummer — have a legal right to free education in the Swedish municipal school system. You do not need to pay anything to access grundskola (ages 7–16) or gymnasium (ages 16–19) in Sweden. This right begins the day you arrive.
The practical implication: if you are between jobs, waiting for residence documentation, or simply exploring Sweden before committing, your children can be enrolled in a local Swedish school at no cost.
The Swedish school system — structure
- Förskola (preschool): Ages 1–5, income-based fees (see the childcare guide)
- Förskoleklass (preschool class): Age 6, free and nearly universal, part of the school building
- Grundskola (compulsory school): Ages 7–15, 9 years, free
- Gymnasium (upper secondary): Ages 16–19, free, voluntary but attended by around 99% of students
- Teaching in the municipal system is in Swedish

International School of Stockholm (ISS)
Smaller than SIS; also IB-focused. Check current availability and programme offering directly with the school as programmes and year groups can change.
British International Primary School of Stockholm
Focuses on the British national curriculum for primary ages. Independent, fee-paying. Primarily for families who expect to return to the UK or continue in the British school system abroad.
American International School
Serves the American curriculum. Contact the school directly for current status, fees, and year groups offered.
Engelska skolan — the free English-medium option
Engelska skolan (often called "the English School") is a chain of Swedish independent schools (friskolor) that deliver the Swedish national curriculum through the medium of English. This is a critical distinction:
- It is not an IB school
- It follows Swedish curriculum requirements
- Children graduate with Swedish qualifications (not A-levels or an IB diploma)
- It is free of charge — funded by Swedish education vouchers like all friskolor
- It has schools in Stockholm and other major Swedish cities
- It is consistently oversubscribed; waiting lists can be years long
- The language of instruction is primarily English but Swedish is a core subject
Engelska skolan is a strong option for families planning to stay in Sweden long term and who want English as the primary classroom language without paying international school fees.
Other friskolor with English elements
Several Swedish independent schools (friskolor) emphasise English or have international profiles at no cost. Some examples in Stockholm include:
- Vittra schools (progressive Swedish curriculum, some English elements)
- IES (International English School) — similar model to Engelska skolan; Swedish curriculum in English
These schools are free and open to all Swedish-resident children. Places are allocated by queue — register as early as possible.
Entering the Swedish public school system as a non-Swedish speaker
If you enrol your child in a regular Swedish school without any English option:
Förberedelseklass (preparation class): Most Swedish municipalities offer an introductory class for newly arrived children who do not speak Swedish. Children are assessed and placed in this class before joining a mainstream class. The aim is to integrate children into the mainstream as quickly as possible.
Modersmålsundervisning (mother tongue instruction): If Swedish is not your child's first language, the school is obliged to offer instruction in the child's mother tongue if enough students share that language. Ask the school about this — many families do not know it exists.
Children pick up Swedish remarkably fast in school environments, typically reaching functional fluency within 1–2 years.
SFI — Swedish for Adults
For adults (not children), SFI (svenska för invandrare) is a free municipal Swedish language course for newcomers who need to learn Swedish. It is separate from the school system and covered in more detail in the Swedish language guide. Contact your municipality (kommunen) to enrol.
Practical tips for choosing
| Factor | Fee-paying international | Engelska skolan / IES | Swedish public school |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | SEK 150k–220k+/year | Free | Free |
| Curriculum | IB / British / American | Swedish (in English) | Swedish |
| Qualifications | IB Diploma / GCSE | Swedish betyg | Swedish betyg |
| English at home later | Easier transition | Good | Some adjustment |
| Wait time | Often 1–2 years | Often 1–3 years | Usually quick |
Common problems and fixes
"The international school has a 2-year waiting list." Apply now, even before you have moved. Enrol your child in the local Swedish school as a bridge — it is free and legally guaranteed. Swedish public schools are generally strong.
"My child doesn't speak Swedish." The municipality has a legal obligation to assess your child and provide preparation class (förberedelseklass) support. Contact the kommunens skolförvaltning to arrange this.
"I don't know if we'll stay long term." If uncertain, the free Swedish system is the lower-risk choice financially. An IB education is portable internationally; a Swedish education is excellent but mostly recognised within Nordic/European systems without additional steps.
