If you lose your job in Sweden, the difference between a manageable few months and a financial crisis usually comes down to one thing: whether you joined an a-kassa (arbetslöshetskassa, an unemployment insurance fund) while you were still employed. This is Sweden's main unemployment safety net, and it is not automatic — you have to opt in, pay a small monthly fee, and meet certain conditions before a payout is possible.

This guide explains the two levels of cover, which fund to join, what it costs, the conditions you must meet, how much you actually get and for how long, and the exact steps to claim. The rules changed substantially on 1 October 2025, so older advice you find online is often wrong — the figures below reflect the current income-based system.


The two levels: basic benefit vs income-based insurance

There are two separate things that confuse almost every new arrival:

  1. Grundförsäkring (basic benefit) — a flat, low-level safety net. You can qualify for it even without being a fund member, but only if you meet the work/income conditions. It is paid at a maximum of around 510 SEK per day (confirm the current figure at iaf.se). That is roughly 11,000 SEK a month before tax — survival money, not income replacement.

  2. Inkomstbaserad ersättning (income-based benefit) — the real cover. To get it you must be a member of an a-kassa for at least 12 months before becoming unemployed. It replaces a percentage of your previous income up to a ceiling, far above the basic level.

The takeaway: the basic benefit exists, but it is a floor, not a plan. The whole point of paying the monthly fee is to unlock the income-based level.


Which fund to join, and the fee

There are around two dozen funds. Most are tied to an industry or profession (teachers, engineers, commerce, public sector), but you do not have to pick the one matching your exact job — you can choose almost any fund, and they all pay benefits under the same national rules set by the IAF (Inspektionen för arbetslöshetsförsäkringen, the Swedish Unemployment Insurance Inspectorate). If your job fits no specific fund, Alfa-kassan accepts anyone.

What differs between funds is the monthly membership fee, which currently ranges roughly 130–170 SEK per month depending on the fund. About 25% of the fee is tax-deductible, lowering the real cost. Because the benefit rules are identical across funds, picking the cheapest one you are eligible for is a reasonable default.

Join as early as possible. The 12-month membership clock only starts when you join, so sign up in your first weeks of work, not when trouble appears.


The conditions: membership condition + work/income condition

To get a payout you must clear two separate hurdles.

  • Membership condition (medlemsvillkor): for the income-based level, you normally need 12 months of continuous membership in an a-kassa before becoming unemployed. Less than that, and you fall back to the basic benefit.

  • Work/income condition (arbetsvillkor / inkomstvillkor): since 1 October 2025 this is measured by income earned, not hours worked. In broad terms, within the 12-month qualifying period (ramtid) you must have earned at least a minimum monthly amount (around 11,000 SEK) in several months and a total over the period (around 120,000 SEK) to reach the longer benefit duration. The exact thresholds and how part-months count are set in the law and adjusted over time — verify the current numbers with your fund or at iaf.se before relying on them.

How much you get, and for how long

Benefits are paid per benefit day (five days per week), and the percentage steps down over time. Under the post-October-2025 rules the structure is approximately:

  • A short waiting period of a couple of days at the start, paid at 0 SEK.
  • Days 1–100: up to 80% of your previous income, capped at roughly 1,236 SEK/day.
  • Days 101–300: the cap and percentage step down (commonly to around 70% and a lower daily ceiling).
  • Total duration: 300 benefit days — extended to 450 days if you have children under 18.

The income ceiling means the highest income-based payout works out to around 27,200 SEK per month before tax (80% of a 34,000 SEK monthly cap). How to claim, step by step

  1. Register with Arbetsförmedlingen on your first day without work. Do it online at arbetsformedlingen.se. You cannot register retroactively, and benefit days are lost for any day you were unregistered.
  2. Apply to your a-kassa. Log in to your fund's website and submit an application for compensation, stating you are now unemployed.
  3. Report your time (declare your days). Each period you submit a declaration — historically the kassakort (benefit card) — telling the fund which days you were unemployed, sick, working part-time, etc. Payment is based on what you report.
  4. Submit your monthly activity report (aktivitetsrapport) to Arbetsförmedlingen. This lists the jobs you applied for. Missing it can pause your benefits.
  5. Keep job-seeking and accept suitable work. Turning down suitable jobs without good cause can reduce or stop your payments.

Common problems and fixes

  • "I only get the basic benefit." You were a member for under 12 months, or not at all. There is no shortcut once you are unemployed — the fix is preventative: join a fund the moment you start working in Sweden.
  • "I registered with Arbetsförmedlingen a week late." Those days are gone; you cannot backdate. Register on day one, even if you think a new job is close.
  • "My EU work history isn't counting." Work in another EU/EEA country can sometimes count toward the conditions, but you usually need a PD U1 document from that country's unemployment authority. Request it before you leave, or ask the authority there to send it.
  • "My benefits stopped without warning." The most common cause is a missed aktivitetsrapport or a late benefit declaration. Log in, check for outstanding reports, and contact your fund — gaps can often be corrected.
  • "I'm self-employed / freelancing." Different rules apply to egenföretagare, including how your business must be wound down or dormant before you can claim. Confirm your specific situation directly with your a-kassa before assuming you qualify.
