Dental Care in Sweden for Expats — Costs, Subsidies, and Finding a Dentist
How dental care works in Sweden: the adult subsidy system via Försäkringskassan, Folktandvården vs private dentists, typical costs, and free care for under-24s.
Dental care in Sweden has its own separate system — it sits outside the regular healthcare system that covers GP visits and hospital care. Most adults pay a significant portion of costs themselves. The subsidies exist but require understanding the rules before you can make use of them.
Dental care is not part of general healthcare
In Sweden, general medical care uses the patientavgift system with an annual SEK 1,300 ceiling. Dental care does not. Adults have a separate subsidy arrangement managed by Försäkringskassan (the Social Insurance Agency), and the amounts you pay out of pocket are considerably higher.
This surprises many expats arriving from countries where dental is bundled into public health insurance. It is not in Sweden. Budget for it separately.
The adult dental subsidy system (tandvårdsförsäkringen)
The subsidy system for adults has two components:
1. Annual preventive subsidy (tandvårdsbidrag)
All adults registered in Sweden receive an annual contribution toward preventive dental care:
- SEK 300 per year for ages 24–29 and 65+
- SEK 150 per year for ages 30–64
This is automatically credited to your dental account with Försäkringskassan when you have a personnummer. You don't need to apply — tell your dentist your personnummer and they deduct it. It doesn't roll over — use it within the calendar year.
2. High-cost protection (tandvård inom högkostnadsskyddet)
For treatment costs (fillings, crowns, root canals — not purely cosmetic work):
- Up to SEK 3,000 out of pocket: you pay everything
- SEK 3,000–15,000 out of pocket: Försäkringskassan covers 50%
- Above SEK 15,000: Försäkringskassan covers 85%
This is calculated on the reference price (referenspriset) set by Försäkringskassan, not the dentist's actual charge. If a dentist charges more than the reference price, the subsidy is still calculated on the reference price — you pay the full difference above it. Always ask your dentist what portion of their fee exceeds the reference price before agreeing to a treatment plan.
Free dental care for young people
Children and young people receive free dental care through the public system up to and including age 23. From 2025, this was extended to age 24 — verify the current upper age limit at 1177.se as this is subject to government budget decisions. Folktandvården (the public dental service) handles most of this free care for under-24s.
Folktandvården vs private dentists
Folktandvården is the public dental service, operating clinics in every region. Key facts:
- Treats both adults and children
- Fees follow the national reference price exactly (no surcharges above the reference price)
- Waitlists can be longer than private clinics for routine care
- Find your nearest clinic via 1177.se → Hitta vård → Tandvård
Private dentists (privata tandläkare) are common, especially in cities. They may charge above the reference price. Quality is generally high. Some private clinics offer faster appointments for routine check-ups. Check whether they are registered with Försäkringskassan so your subsidy applies — most are.
To find dentists in your area, use 1177.se → Hitta vård and filter for tandläkare (dentist) or tandläkarmottagning (dental clinic).
Typical adult costs
These are approximate — actual fees depend on your dentist and region:
| Treatment | Approximate cost (SEK) |
|---|---|
| Exam + basic X-rays | 400–700 |
| Teeth cleaning (profylax) | 300–700 |
| Exam + cleaning combined | 700–1,500 |
| Single filling | 800–1,500 |
| Crown | 5,000–12,000 |
| Root canal (single root) | 3,000–6,000 |
| Tooth extraction | 600–2,000 |
For major restorative work (crowns, implants), get a written treatment plan (behandlingsplan) with reference price breakdowns before agreeing. The dentist is required to provide this.
Emergency dental care
If you have severe tooth pain or a dental emergency outside normal clinic hours:
- Search 1177.se for akut tandvård in your area
- Call 1177 for guidance on the nearest after-hours dental service
- Most regions have a designated emergency dental clinic operating evenings and weekends
- Emergency treatment costs are paid out of pocket; subsidy rules still apply to eligible treatments
Common problems and fixes
"I just arrived and don't have a dentist." Search 1177.se Hitta vård for tandläkare near your postcode. Both Folktandvården and private clinics accept new patients (Folktandvården may have a waitlist). For a routine check-up, private clinics often have shorter waits.
"My dentist charged more than I expected." Ask for an itemised receipt showing the reference price versus actual charge. The subsidy is calculated on the reference price only. If you feel you were overcharged, Försäkringskassan has a complaints process.
"I'm under 24 — is my care really free?" Register with Folktandvården as early as possible. The free care covers examinations, treatments, and braces where clinically needed. Purely cosmetic procedures are not included. Bring your personnummer to the first appointment.
"I don't have a personnummer yet." You can still see a dentist privately and pay full price. The Försäkringskassan subsidy system requires a personnummer. Emergency care is available regardless.
