Sweden for Indian Expats: Practical Guide from Arrival to Settled Life
Sweden is one of the most popular destinations for Indian IT professionals, researchers, and students in Scandinavia. With a strong tech ecosystem, transparent immigration system, and high quality of life, it is a realistic long-term destination. Here is everything you need to navigate it.
Before You Arrive: Work Permit Process
Indian nationals need a work permit to work in Sweden. The process:
- Job offer received from a Swedish employer
- Employer advertises the role for at least 10 days in the EU/EEA (proof required)
- Employer submits application at migrationsverket.se on your behalf
- You submit your part of the application online (passport copy, employment contract, health insurance details)
- Wait for decision: Currently 3–10 months. Check status at Migrationsverket's portal.
- Receive residence and work permit card by post to India or your current address
- Register with Skatteverket within 1–2 weeks of arriving in Sweden to begin the personnummer process
Important: Do not quit your job in India or book a one-way flight until the work permit is approved. Migrationsverket decisions are unpredictable on timing.
First Two Weeks: The Admin Checklist
Within the first two weeks of arriving:
- Visit Skatteverket office with: passport, work permit, employment contract, Swedish address — begin personnummer application
- Open a Swedish bank account (Swedbank, SEB, or Handelsbanken — most straightforward for new arrivals without personnummer)
- Get a Swedish SIM card (Tele2, Comviq, Tre — prepaid works immediately without personnummer)
- Register with your local Vårdcentral (health centre) once you have a personnummer
- Open a Wise account for sending money to India (no personnummer required for Wise)
Banking for Indian Expats in Sweden
Swedish bank account: You will need one for salary receipt and Swish. Swedbank and Handelsbanken are the most accessible for new arrivals. Bring your passport, work permit, and employment letter. Allow 2–4 weeks for full account opening with BankID.
Wise (for SEK → INR remittances): Open this immediately — it requires only passport verification, not a personnummer. Set up once, use every month to send money home. Saves approximately 3–4% compared to Swedish bank transfers.
Revolut: Good for travel spending and holding multiple currencies. Free plan is sufficient for most needs.
Sending Money to India: Step-by-Step
Most Indian expats in Sweden send a portion of their salary home monthly. The recommended setup:
- Salary arrives in Swedish bank account (SEK)
- Transfer to Wise (bank transfer, free)
- In Wise, set up a transfer: SEK → INR to your Indian bank account
- Enter recipient details: account number + IFSC code
- Confirm — typically arrives within 6 hours
Banks that receive Wise transfers without issues: HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis Bank, Kotak. ICICI NRE/NRO accounts also work with Wise, though ICICI sometimes applies their own small fee.
Tax: India-Sweden DTAA
Sweden and India signed a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement. In practice for most salaried Swedish employees:
- You pay Swedish income tax on your Swedish salary
- This income is exempt in India (you are a non-resident Indian / NRI)
- File FBAR-equivalent with India if holding significant NRE/NRO balances (consult a CA in India)
- The Swedish Skatteverket form for foreign income is filed as part of the standard Swedish tax return
Indian Community and Social Life
Religious spaces:
- Hindu temple (Indiska Hinduiska Kulturcentret) in Stockholm
- Several mosques and a Sikh gurdwara in Stockholm and Gothenburg
- Arya Samaj Sweden
Cultural events:
- Diwali celebrations organised by the Indian Embassy (Embassy of India, Stockholm)
- IndianSweden festivals in October/November
Indian restaurants: Strong Indian restaurant scene in Stockholm (Mäster Olofs Krog, Curry Corner, Indian Inn) and Gothenburg. Quality has improved significantly over the past decade.
Grocery stores:
- Stockholm: Bombay Masala (Tensta), Asian Supermarket (Rinkeby), Taj Mahal Livs (Hägersten)
- Gothenburg: Asian Bazaar, India & Asia Livs
Healthcare: What Indian Expats Should Know
Sweden's healthcare system is excellent but structured differently from India:
- GP (Allmänläkare / Husläkare): Always your first point of contact. Register at a Vårdcentral near your home. Cannot self-refer to a specialist.
- Emergency (Akut/Akutmottagning): 112 for life-threatening emergencies. 1177 for non-urgent medical advice (interpreter services available in several languages including Hindi).
- Cost: 100–200 SEK per GP visit. Annual out-of-pocket cap ~1,300 SEK (högkostnadsskydd).
- Dental: Not covered by general healthcare for adults. Budget 500–2,000 SEK/year.
Driving in Sweden with an Indian Licence
Your Indian driving licence is valid in Sweden for one year from your date of registration as a Swedish resident. After that, you must convert to a Swedish licence by:
- Taking a mandatory Swedish theory test (teoriprov) in English or Swedish
- Taking a practical driving test (körprov)
- Submitting Indian licence, passport, personnummer, and vision test results to Transportstyrelsen
Expect to pay 4,000–6,000 SEK total for the conversion process including lessons to familiarise with Swedish traffic rules.
