Opening a Swedish Bank Account as a Foreigner
Most Swedish banks require a personnummer โ but there are real paths forward for newcomers. Here's which banks are most accessible, what to bring, and what.
Compiled by Bikram Nath from official sources
At a glance
- Who needs it
- All expats in Sweden โ needed for Swish, BankID, rent payments, and most Swedish digital infrastructure
- Prerequisite
- Personnummer required by most Swedish banks (Handelsbanken, Nordea, SEB) for a standard account
- Best banks for newcomers
- Handelsbanken and Nordea โ both accept foreign customers by appointment; SEB also viable once you have a personnummer
- Bridge option
- Wise or Revolut โ hold and receive SEK, pay by card, send internationally; use while waiting for personnummer
- Watch out for
- Wise does not give you a Swedish BIC/IBAN, so you cannot use Swish or get BankID until you have a real Swedish bank account
Send money home without the bank markup
Most Swedish banks add a 3โ5% hidden margin on the exchange rate when you send money abroad. Wise uses the real mid-market rate with a small, transparent fee shown upfront โ so more of your money actually arrives.
- โ Hold SEK, EUR, GBP and 40+ currencies in one account
- โ Get a local EUR/GBP IBAN โ useful before your Swedish bank is open
- โ Wise debit card works in Sweden and across the EU

Sweden's major banks are conservative about opening accounts for newcomers โ tighter anti-money-laundering rules implemented across the EU have made this stricter, not easier. Most banks require a personnummer for a full account. That said, there are legitimate paths forward, and good interim solutions while you wait.
The Personnummer Requirement
Since 2022, most Swedish banks require a personnummer to open an account. This is not arbitrary โ it is tied to know-your-customer (KYC) requirements and the Swedish credit registry, which uses personnummer as its primary identifier.
The good news: once you have your personnummer (typically 4โ8 weeks after registering with Skatteverket), opening an account is straightforward. The harder question is what to do in the interim.
Major Swedish Banks: What to Expect
Handelsbanken
Generally considered the most newcomer-friendly of the major banks. Handelsbanken operates a decentralised model where individual branch managers have more discretion than at other banks. In-person appointments are mandatory; online applications will not work. Some branches have opened accounts for customers with a valid residence permit and employment contract, even without a personnummer. Results vary by branch.
Nordea
Another commonly recommended option for expats. Nordea has English-language services and experience with international customers. Book an appointment specifically for "new customer from abroad." Bring your employment contract, residence permit, and passport. Like Handelsbanken, outcomes vary.
SEB
Solid option once you have a personnummer. SEB has good digital infrastructure and English support. Less flexibility than Handelsbanken for pre-personnummer situations.
Swedbank
One of Sweden's largest banks, widely used by Swedes but with less flexibility for foreign nationals without a personnummer. Worth trying in person, but expect more friction.
Lรคnsfรถrsรคkringar Bank
A regional insurance company with banking services. Competitive interest rates. Requires personnummer for standard accounts.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
Prepare these documents for your branch visit:
- Valid passport (not just a national ID โ some banks require a passport specifically)
- Personnummer (if you have it)
- Proof of Swedish address (rental contract, employer letter)
- Residence permit (non-EU citizens)
- Employment contract or proof of income
- If no Swedish income yet: bank statements from your home country showing sufficient funds
Step-by-Step: Opening an Account with a Personnummer
This is the standard path for most expats:
- Register with Skatteverket and wait for your personnummer
- Book an in-person appointment at your chosen bank โ do not rely on online applications
- Bring all documents listed above
- Complete the KYC questionnaire (source of funds, purpose of account)
- Receive your debit card within 5โ10 business days
- Activate BankID through the bank's app
- Activate Swish once BankID is set up
Options Before You Have a Personnummer
Wise (recommended bridge)
Wise gives you a multi-currency account with a real IBAN, SEK balance, and a debit card that works everywhere Mastercard is accepted. You can receive salary to your Wise IBAN in many cases, pay bills, and withdraw cash. Wise does not replace a Swedish bank account long-term โ you cannot get Swish or BankID with it โ but it covers the gap effectively. Opening a Wise account requires only a passport and takes minutes.
Revolut
Similar to Wise. Revolut offers a European IBAN, a virtual and physical card, and SEK support. It is widely used across Europe and works well in Sweden. The same limitation applies: no Swish, no BankID.
N26
A German-licensed digital bank operating in Sweden. Requires an ID document and a selfie โ no personnummer needed. However, N26 does not have SEK as a native currency and FX fees apply. It is a backup option, not a preferred one.
Average Monthly Fees (2025 Approximate)
Swedish banks typically charge a monthly account fee for their basic packages:
| Bank | Basic Account Fee |
|---|---|
| Handelsbanken | 0โ45 SEK/month depending on package |
| Nordea | 0โ45 SEK/month |
| SEB | 0โ50 SEK/month |
| Swedbank | 0โ45 SEK/month |
| Wise | No monthly fee; transaction fees apply |
| Revolut | Free tier available; premium plans from ~79 SEK/month |
Verify current fees directly with each bank before opening โ these change regularly.
Internet and Mobile Banking
All major Swedish banks have English-language apps with solid functionality. BankID is the authentication method for all of them โ once you have BankID, managing your account digitally is seamless. Before BankID, your access to digital banking will be limited to basic read-only views or branch visits.
A Note on Credit History
Sweden's credit system (via UC and Bisnode) is tied to personnummer. Until you have a personnummer, you have no Swedish credit history. This means no credit cards, no overdraft, and no mortgage. After a year of registered residency and income, you begin building a credit profile automatically.
